1. Work within the feedback groups provided for the course, to partner with a peer. Working with that peer identify an area of weakness with regard to technology use aligned with the research-based technology integration framework you have identified (week1) AND the ISTE Standards for Educators and Students.
(A) In collaboration with your peer, develop the peer’s SMART Goal to address the area of need. Suggestion: Focus on a goal that could be addressed in no more than 1 or 2 semesters.
(B) Outline 3-5 action steps to support your peer in the attainment of the SMART goal.
A) Christina’s SMART Goal: By the start of semester 1, 100% of Westwood Regional High School (WRSD) faculty will attend at least two professional development workshops focused on the pedagogical integration of Google Apps for Education. The goal is to track attendance for 100% faculty participation across a minimum of two workshops, which provides a clear and quantifiable target. Requiring attendance at the two workshops within the specified timeframe is a realistic and attainable goal for all faculty members. This goal directly aligns with the district’s need to improve technology integration and enhance student engagement, as it focuses on the effective use of a tool already provided to teachers. The deadline is clearly set for the start of Semester I, ensuring that teachers can immediately apply what they learned and continue to use these skills throughout the academic year.
B) Action Step 1: Survey teacher population of confidence levels in utilizing google apps for educational purposes before sessions: To create the most effective professional development settings, you need to take into account feedback of the teachers you are planning to teach in these professional development settings. It allows instruction to be tailored to their needs. In my brief experience of teaching I have seen teachers become frustrated because their professional development feels irrelevant to them. It is important to make their voices heard and empowered to allow these professional developments to be as best as they can. This should also help the goal of having 100% attendance because teachers will feel they are being accounted for.
Action Step 2: Incorporate relevant professional development sessions using feedback: The professional development can include a few different apps that are provided from the district that teachers wish to learn more about. During these professional development sessions, not only will the technology be shown but effective teaching strategies can be shown as well. There should also be built in time during the training for teachers to collaborate and understand the uses of these apps for their classrooms.
Action Step 3: Have teachers show relevant examples of how they utilized google apps for pedagogical integration: This is to ensure that teachers are truly leveraging the technology instead of utilizing the technology as a substitute to traditional teaching methods. The new technology is supposed to enhance the learning experience creating unique opportunities students have never had before. This step can be done in between the first and second professional development session
Action Step 4: Re-evaluation after second professional development. Gain more feedback and surveys from not only teachers, but more stakeholders: students, parents, and admin. Understanding new perspectives on teacher confidence level in what they are teaching is crucial. However, it is also important to understand how others have felt in the process as well. This can allow for more effective professional developments in the future.
2. How does the technology integration framework you have identified as appropriate to your context support the attainment of the SMART goal? How does this framework inform the action steps you have outlined?
The Triple E Framework can also support the attainment of Christina’s SMART goal. The framework takes into account three facets: engagement, enhancement, and extension (Kolb, 2020). When looking at engagement, I am making sure that teachers are engaged in professional development by taking into account survey data before these sessions are conducted. This will motivate teachers to want to attend these sessions and get them towards that 100% attendance goal. Regarding enhancement, when teachers are showing their examples of how they are using the technology in the classroom, this shows that they are creating unique learning experiences for students and that it's beyond traditional teaching methods. Regarding extension, the hope is that through the survey data from more stakeholders, we can create a more holistic understanding of how effective the technology is being utilized and what adjustments we can make in the future to make it even better.
3. Which Student and Educator ISTE Standards are addressed in the SMART Goal and action steps you have outlined?
There are both student and educator ISTE Standards addressed in the SMART Goal and action steps. I believe this associates with the student standard 1.3 Knowledge Constructor (ISTE, 2025d). Through teachers gaining this valuable professional development experience, students are able to gain greater insights and have more meaningful learning experiences leveraged through the use of technology (ISTE, 2025d). Ultimately, having these teachers more experienced and confident in their technology use will result in great student benefits. Regarding educator standards, I believe this associates with the educator standard 2.5 Designer (ISTE, 2025b). In this process, teachers will need to create authentic technology-based learning experiences for students (ISTE, 2025b).
4. Reflect upon this process as a facilitator of peer learning. Which of the Coach or Educational Leader ISTE Standards did you address? Discuss your insights. How might the Essential Conditions also support this work?
Regarding the Educational leader ISTE Standards, I believe this associated with the 3.2 standard visionary planner (ISTE, 2025c). In this process, I was able to provide a plan with the professional development and take into account feedback of stakeholders to help with future professional development sessions. I also think regarding the coach standards I associate with the 4.5 professional learning facilitator (ISTE, 2025a). The SMART goal was centered around professional development, and I was able to think of effective methods that can help this goal be achieved. Also, by making sure this process can be repeated and improved to help future sessions. Overall, I enjoyed this experience. It made me critically think of effective ideas to help a SMART goal and makes me more confident that with time I can achieve my goals as well. Regarding ISTE’s essential conditions, it is crucial that we have prepared educators (ISTE, 2025). Through the use of professional development, we can ensure that teachers are not only using technology, but are effectively leveraging it in the classroom.

Alex- This is a very well thought out post! I like how you ensured that teachers were going to be enagaged during the PD. Otherwise it may feel like a waste of their time if they feel like they aren't doing anything. Collecting feedback from them through surveys is a great idea!
ReplyDeleteAlex, this is an excellent professional development plan. You have gone beyond the goal to create a realistic and effective strategy for technology integration. I particularly enjoyed how you broke down the action steps. Your focus on surveying teachers first is a crucial step that is often overlooked; it ensures the PD is relevant and valuable, which will definitely help with your goals. As we have discussed together during our collaboration, it is important for PD to be a continuous cycle of learning and application, rather than just a one time event. I think our goals and approach to this plan focused on the idea that teacher should not just use the tools, but they should be able to leverage it to truly enhance and transform the learning experience for students. It is always a pleasure to discuss the perks of professional development and technology integration with someone who clearly gets it! Thanks for sharing, Alex!
ReplyDeleteAlex, thorough post! Interesting that Christina's SMART goal has to do with Google Apps, and for mine I focused on a Google Chrome extension. Kolb's Triple E Framework was the chosed framework for myself and my collegues as well. As you demonstrate in this blog post, it is very versatile, applying to a wide variety of situations and uses, while still retaining it's strength, if applied correctly.
ReplyDeleteAlex, I think you did a great job connecting professional development to the Triple E Framework. I like that you emphasized teacher voice through surveys first... this really ties to “engage,” since PD feels more meaningful when teachers see their needs reflected. Having teachers share examples is a great way to show enhancement in practice, not just theory. I also thought it was smart to include stakeholder feedback at the end; that helps extend the impact of PD beyond the sessions. Your plan really shows how intentional design can build teacher confidence with Google Apps.
ReplyDeleteAlex, Nice post this week! Some very good action steps for Christina's smart goal. The action step one reminds me of my last research class. We went over surveys and what is needed to have an effective survey. In order to have an effective survey that actually helps you need some specific requirements such as relevant questions, avoiding biased questions, as well as creating something that you can easily assimilate the data into something that actually proved meaningful analysis. Anyways, well done and I look forward to reading you post next week!
ReplyDeleteHey Alex, I liked your post and work with Christina for Westwood High and the action steps addressing motivated attendance and the enhancement and extension from Kolb - the out-of-box thinking tends to spark the most effect, anything out of norm seems to create a stronger mental attachment to understand.
