A technology integration framework that could be used by my district is the Triple E Framework. The Triple E Framework provides various benefits regarding technology use in a school. It allows technology to be looked at under a holistic view by understanding the different impacts technology can have (Kolb, 2020). First, the framework mentions the idea of engagement (Kolb, 2020). Engagement is necessary to make sure that students are actually interested in starting the learning process (Kolb, 2020). Another aspect of the framework is enhancement (Kolb, 2020). Enhancement involves going beyond just a basic understanding of the material (Kolb, 2020). Instead, the goal is to make sure that the technology is actually useful in creating deeper understandings (Kolb, 2020). In this section of the framework, it is also important to make sure that the technology being utilized is not something that could be done with traditional pen and paper (Kolb, 2020). Creating an online worksheet does not help give the enhancement of learning students are looking for. Instead, a virtual tour of a museum would be much more valuable. The last aspect of the framework regards extension (Kolb, 2020). Extension is going beyond the assignment itself and making genuine connections with the world (Kolb, 2020). This is where meaningful learning is emphasized (Kolb, 2020). It could mean learning a new technological skill, developing communication skills, or communicating with others (Kolb, 2020). Classes and schoolwork, even when leveraged with technology, need to serve a greater purpose. Students need to learn necessary skills in life regardless of where their life takes them. These learning opportunities leveraged with technology can be extremely valuable in helping these students become quality global citizens.

Overall, I believe this framework does align with other initiatives in place in my school district. In the district’s technology integration plan, their mission states how they wish to create meaningful learning experiences for students (Patchogue-Medford School District, 2022). The Triple E Framework tries to help assist in meaningful learning experiences for students by looking through various lenses in engagement, enhancement, and extension (Kolb, 2020). It allows technology to be observed to ensure it is interesting and impactful in student’s lives. The district also wishes to develop necessary skills for college and career readiness (Patchogue-Medford School District, 2022). The framework ensures that students are learning beyond the initial subject matter (Kolb, 2020). It is important that teachers use technology as a point of leverage and not just because they “have to”. This model does show significant promise. I think this model allows teachers to take a deeper look into what they are planning for lessons to ensure the technology aspect is truly beneficial for their students in both the present and future (Kolb, 2020). The skills they build in the classroom are necessary to help them understand the subject matter, however, these skills also will help these students prepare for the future. I can make clear connections to the ISTE standards regarding this framework. One connection I made is through the student standard 1.7 global collaborator (ISTE, 2025b). This standard aligns with the idea of students being able to work with each other on both a local and global scale (Kolb, 2020). When utilizing technology, students need to be able to work with each other to allow them to be successful in learning for the now and how to work in the future (Kolb, 2020). Another standard I connected this framework to is the educator standard 2.5 designer (ISTE, 2025a). Teachers need to make authentic and meaningful learning experiences for students (ISTE, 2025a). This can be ensured through the Triple E Framework as it allows teachers to be reflective of what they are preparing for students (Kolb, 2020). This framework is similar to the current framework in place. According to the technology integration plan, the current evaluation plan is SAMR (Patchogue-Medford School District, 2022). The SAMR model also has to deal with current teaching practices and what can be done to create more meaningful learning experiences (Kimmons, 2017). Ultimately, I believe the district could make a transition to the Triple E Framework as it does draw similarities to the SAMR Model.

  1. Hi Alex! Nice to see you are in another class with me! This is a fantastic and insightful analysis. You have made a very convincing case by connecting the Triple E Framework directly to your district's goals, existing SAMR model, and the ISTE Standards. What do you see as the biggest challenge in moving from the SAMR model to Triple E? Thanks for sharing!

  2. Hello again, Alex so nice to see we are classmates again. I fully agree that the technology implemented should not just be a replacement for what can be done by traditional means as that can leave deficiencies in the students in other areas. The emphasis on imparting necessary life skills are vital in my opinion. The Triple E Framework seems to be conducive to cross disciplinary instruction where multiple subjects can benefit from one another.

  3. Hi Alex,

Your analysis is insightful, especially in how you connected the Triple E Framework to your district’s goals. You made a great point about technology needing to add real value to student learning, rather than simply replacing traditional paper-and-pencil methods. I also agree that the Triple E Framework can effectively support cross-subject learning and help make lessons more meaningful.

  4. Hey Alex! Just like the others it is nice to see you in another class. Your blog post is very thorough on Kolb's method. I also choose the Triple E framework as it just feels straight forward as well as has excellent practical application. I look forward to reading more of your blogs down the line. All the best!

  5. Hi Alex, agreed the Triple E is beneficial by offering a quick glance and understanding of objectives. To see the process at the 30,000ft level and dive in to address points is valuable here, and in so many sectors of business where a developmental process is the goal. The student learning journey is not much different than any task undertaken as a professional—so the value is timeless.

  6. Great overview of the Triple E Framework. I especially appreciate how you connected it to ISTE educator standards. I'm glad to see your school is starting from the place of USING a framework at present, even if it's not Triple E. I could not find any evidence of my district having a framework in place at the moment.
