Intro to Infographic
There are many things to take into account when understanding how students learn. Some of the main points made within chapter 4 of how people learn include ideas of executive function, self-regulation, and the working memory (National Academies of Sciences, 2018). As educators, we need to do our best to make sure that students are engaged. We need to make sure student executive function is effective by having them focused or switching ideas when dealing with a task (National Academies of Sciences, 2018). Self-regulation is also crucial. If students are unable to control their behaviors, they will have a difficult time learning new material (National Academies of Sciences, 2018). Finally, working memory deals with the idea of being engaged by making sure information is being manipulated (National Academies of Sciences, 2018).
3 Major Points
As previously mentioned, three elements that impact curriculum design are executive function, self-regulation, and working memory (National Academies of Sciences, 2018). Regarding executive function, this refers to how people are able to retain information by remaining focused or by switching ideas to accomplish something (National Academies of Sciences, 2018). It requires brainpower to either stay focused within a task or to change your mind and find a new solution to the problem. It is crucial that as teachers we direct students towards accomplishing these goals whether it is remaining on task or changing ideas entirely. Regarding self-regulation, it refers to a student’s ability to control their thoughts and emotions necessary to help them achieve their goals (National Academies of Sciences, 2018). This can be difficult for students because they have so many things going on in their lives. However, as teachers we can do our best to help them through life. When students feel more comfortable in your class, they will be more open to learning. The last element that was referenced was the idea of working memory. Working memory deals with not only learning the new information, but to manipulate it into meaningful learning experiences (National Academies of Sciences, 2018). As teachers, we can do a lot to help the working memory and create amazing and intriguing learning experiences for students through creative lesson planning.
Connection to Gura
Gura has many ideas regarding the learning environment. Gura believes that creativity is the active innovation within the learning experience (Gura, 2020). Ultimately, teachers need to take the responsibility of making creativity part of a learning goal (Gura, 2020). This connects to the other chapter because it also believes that through creative learning experiences we can have students at their best (National Academies of Sciences, 2018). Creative learning experiences can allow students to have better executive function, self-regulation, and working memory (National Academies of Sciences, 2018). I have heard that the best classroom management is having an engaging lesson. That all derives through a teacher’s creativity.
Connection to Rivero
Rivero provides various instances in which teachers can utilize and leverage creativity for their students. One of the programs he mentions is adobe spark. Adobe spark allows students to create impactful visual stories (Rivero, 2020). This reminds me of my experiences within the digital storytelling course I took here. Allowing students to make digital stories can create meaningful learning experiences that they can attach emotion to because it is something they created themselves. This allows a student's working memory to be utilized properly because not only are they learning the information, but they are manipulating it in a creative manner (National Academies of Sciences, 2018). Another effective tool is book creator. I have actually utilized book creator in my English classes this year and the students found it to be really interesting and fun (Rivero, 2020). Students had to use their creativity to make their stories. Some were focused on the same idea, while others changed things around often to create their book (National Academies of Sciences, 2018). Their experiences with book creator can be aligned with the ideas of the executive function (National Academies of Sciences, 2018).
ISTE Standard Connection
The ISTE Standard I associate these readings with is the 1.6 creative communicator standard (ISTE, 2025). I believe these readings encourage the use of creative means for students to accomplish tasks or goals (ISTE, 2025). As teachers, if we can put our students in fun, creative learning opportunities, it can allow for students to learn more effectively. It will also help develop skills such as executive functioning, self-regulation, and working memory (National Academies of Sciences, 2018)

It is very interesting how behavior can play a large role in cognitive function. Behavior is something all educators work with, and it plays a large role in curriculum design! This can impact students' abilities to achieve their goals, which can be frustrating for them. We need to learn how to be patient and gracious in thinking about the whole child when working with our students.
ReplyDeleteHello Alex,
ReplyDeleteAnother blog down! Well done on breaking down the elements in chapter 4. What stood out to me while reading is self regulation. This has so many different aspects to it that affect learning and how well a student learns. SO many things play into it from upbringing, identity, culture , and so much more. I look forward to checkin up on your blog again soon Alex.
All the best,
James Robinson
